Preparing for CQC and OFSTED Inspections: Tips for Success
Expert Tips on How to Survive an Inspection
For many years, I have supported health and educational establishments in preparing for their safeguarding inspections. An inspection can be a daunting prospect; every system, process, and procedure in your service will be under scrutiny. However, with proper preparation and a focus on embedding safeguarding at the heart of your practice, CQC and Ofsted inspections can be an opportunity to showcase your commitment and dedication to high standards.
I work with organisations to ensure their preparation leads to a seamless and positive inspection process for everyone involved.
What Will Inspectors Be Looking For?
Before inspectors visit your organisation, they review your documentation and records, including notifications such as complaints or safeguarding incidents. This pre-inspection review helps them determine which aspects of your service will be the focus of their assessment.
Preparation for Inspection
I have developed a comprehensive audit tool that covers essential domains of responsibility for safeguarding. This document provides inspectors with an overview of your organisation’s key areas of responsibility within the CQC and Ofsted Quality Standards. It highlights system strengths with an evidence-based approach and identifies gaps and weaknesses with a clear action plan for improvement. This audit report is invaluable for inspection preparation and ongoing self-assessment.

Key Lines of Enquiry
So what are the key areas of scrutiny within safeguarding?
Safeguarding Focus Areas for CQC and Ofsted inspections:
- Safety of Children & Adults: How do you as an organisation keep children & adults in your care safe?
- Staff, from safer recruitment records through to staff awareness: Are you confident that all your staff would be able to answer questions regarding safeguarding concerns and where to signpost them? Are staff confident in executing their safeguarding responsibilities and do they know how to escalate? How would you describe the ‘culture’ of safeguarding in your organisation.
- Training and supervision: Are records up to date? Is the training/supervision received fit for purpose or merely a tick box exercise. Can staff recall information specific to the training they have received. How do staff stay updated on relevant safeguarding teaching?
- Policies: Are policies updated and reviewed regularly? Are they accessible and will staff be able to utilise information within the policy. Are they readable or is the policy long and difficult to navigate? So often policies are very long, not indexed and not fit for purpose.
- Safeguarding incidents and complaints: Is there a clear reporting trail? Is there transparency around learning with clearly identifiable actions that are time limited?
- Environment: Is the organisational environemnt conducive with a safeguarding culture? This can be from a structural building safety aspect or individuals feeling safe within the environment.
- Links with other agencies: How does your organisation sit within the larger context of other agencies? Are links established with other organisations? How can you demonstrate these links exist and function well in the context of safeguarding.
- Audits: Is there an audit cycle? Is learning from audits disseminated effectively? Are actions specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bound?
- Data: Can your organisation produce qualitative and quantitative data to support your safeguarding efforts?

Embrace Transparency
A key message to convey to inspectors is honesty and transparency. Inspectors appreciate organisations that openly discuss areas for improvement and demonstrate a culture of consistent learning and development. They do not expect perfection but value a proactive approach to addressing past issues and embedding learning from incidents and complaints.
An organisation that prioritises the safety of children and adults in their care and can evidence this commitment will always perform well in inspections.
